Its been a year and 11 months of blogging and I can tell you it has been a fun and learning experience. I feel you all know the type of person I am from my writings but that's just a fraction of me. That's why I decided to come up with this post so you can know a little bit more about me.

I know I appear soft spoken, kinda strict(I talk like a mum sometimes.lol!) But I swear I can be so much fun too. Okay, just keep reading and be the judge.

1. Five Ways To Win My Heart

Hello darlings and welcome to June! It's midyear already and I'm having a bit of mixed feelings. How's the year been so far for you? I recently started intense tailoring/sewing lessons and I can't wait to share my work with you guys.

Today, I'm going to shed more light on Pinterest for those who don't understand what it's all about. Consider this a beginner's guide.

Big Chop; "the process of cutting off the relaxed or permed ends of one's hair when she is transitioning from chemically processed hair to natural hair". - NaturallyCurly.com

It happened some 15 years ago. I attended Mass with my sister that Sunday morning and I was pretty
sleepy as a result of not sleeping early the previous night.(#teamnightcrawler) So during
offertory(offering time) my sis told me to take a stroll to the church bookshop in a bid to chase sleep away.

I got up and left right after I had dropped my offering and made my way towards the bookshop. Immediately I got outside, a lady approached me speaking Yoruba. From what I can remember she asked me, "What is it? What is your name?" I was confused and pretended I couldn't understand what she was saying coz I didn't want to give a right answer to her questions which would indulge her so I replied, "I don't understand". The next thing was SMACK!! across my cheeks and I was dazed! The sleep didn't waste time to clear from my eyes. What in heaven's name just happened? Wow. Before I could realize myself and the situation at hand, it was quite late. I quickly turned back and made my way inside the church to inform my sis about what happened and by the time we got out, the lady was gone.

Before I went back into church, something occurred to me. There were a few people who had witnessed what happened between me and the lady and nobody made an attempt to come to my rescue. Years later, I derived a few lessons from that incident;

• Stand Up For Yourself- In this life, you always have to make the first attempt to salvage any situation you find yourself in. You have to fight for yourself before anyone can see your effort and then decide to help you out or not. Maybe if I hadn't been so dazed after been hit by the lady and quickly retaliated, someone might have come to ask what the problem was. But then I was just 11 years old. What could I have possibly done?

• Family Always Have Your Back- No matter how much they piss you off and make you mad, they're always there for you. The way my sis jumped up when I told her what happened was enough to ease the pain away. The concern and urge to protect and defend me was incredible.

• People Don't Really Care- Yes, most people only care about themselves. I understand that one needs to mind their business but then, you see a little girl been hit right across the face and you act like nothing happened. In church for that matter. Thank God I wasn't really alone after all.

• Not Every Well-dressed Person Is Mentally Sound- Believe me, there are a lot of sick people on the streets who look so beautiful and handsome that you'd never guess something is wrong with them. This lady was well dressed and that was one of the reasons that even made me stand to listen to her in the first place.

• Walk Away- Some situations require no attention at all. Just walk away while you still have the time to do so. Immediately I heard her speaking Yoruba I should have walked away but being inquisitive, I wanted to hear what she had to say. And I got more than I expected.

Whenever I remember that day, I imagine what would have happened if it had occurred like 2 years ago. Lol! Anyway, lessons learned.
My birthday is in 5 days and I'm super excited! I got the best birthday gift from God himself and I would share the good news with y'all very soon. Hope you're having an awesome week so far.

Be right back,

One of the most challenging things 70% of young adults experience in Nigeria is having to live with their parents after graduating from the university and completion of the NYSC. Getting a house isn't something one can just jump into because it is an expensive venture. This means you have to kick off your career under your parents' roof, further your studies(where applicable) and eventually get married then move to your matrimonial home. Cohabiting isn't encouraged in the least bit...don't even think about it. So this means you're stuck with your parents for the most part of your twenties.

Heyyyyyyyy!!!! Happy New Year guysss!!! 2017 is here at last! I'm so pumped and I guess its because I have a bunch of activities lined out for the year already. How are you?? How did you cross over into the new year? Well, for some reasons, I couldn't make it to church for the vigil Mass which I always look forward to so I attended Mass this morning. I crossed over watching a movie and when it was 12am I paused and screamed 'HAPPY NEW YEAR!' and said a prayer. Not bad ey?

I'm sure everyone's made a list of things they'd like to improve on this year and I certainly have mine too. Making resolutions take a lot of work and is not magic as some people feel immediately you step into a new year, all things automatically become new. Nah...it doesn't work that way.

This year, I've decided to be selfish. Yes. Selfish with my time, attention, and love and to be more concerned about improving myself and becoming a better version of me. I no longer have time to worry myself about how others see me and what they think of me.

I'm simply going to keep doing my very best and challenging myself. Life is too short to chase after others and risk losing yourself in the process. I'm going to love me more.

The blog isn't left out. I promise to be more consistent and churn out exciting content this year. I learned a lot last year as regards blogging and I hope to implement some of those things here. Thank you all for staying with me till this point. It can only get better.

It's also the year of stepping out of my comfort zone! Think big hair, brighter colors, travel, business...I'm going to do things that scare me normally. Life can only be lived once after all.

I'm super grateful to God for making us see another year. I pray that 2017 would be our year of fulfillment and abundance. May all our plans come to life and our wildest dreams come true. 2016 didn't start out rather well for me and my family but I'm so happy for where we are now...the trials and lessons have been worthwhile and I know this is our year of breakthrough.

Cheers to 2017 and to many more blog posts to come!! I wish you all the very best in your endeavors. Have a most prosperous new year.

Stay well,
Evita, xx.

It's 9 days to 2017 and looking back at 2016, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude. Christmas is here already and truthfully, it's just like every other day. The major thing about the season is welcoming Jesus Christ into our hearts and preparing ourselves for His second coming. It's also the season for giving and showing love.

2016 didn't exactly start on a high note for me. I was still job hunting as at January. I turned 25 that same month but I wasn't in the celebration mood as I was solely focused on one thing, getting a job. The much awaited job came in February and 2 months into it, I knew I couldn't go on. I worked Mondays-Saturdays, 8am-6pm and you really don't want to know how much I was being paid. I quit in the third month and a month later, I got another job. This was a much better job in every aspect except the distance from home to work was killing and I spent almost all my salary on transportation.

I fell ill a couple of times due to the stress. Lost a lot of weight too(you think I'm slim now, you should have seen me 3-4 months ago) My parents were really concerned about my well being especially my mum. I was looking sickly and pale but I forged on because I didn't want to stay at home or like we usually say, 'I'm doing it for the experience.'

Then I realized something, it wasn't worth it one bit. Why was I settling for less? I knew I could do better than this. So after much deliberation and soul searching, coupled with some other family related issues, I quit my job again and I felt like I was back to square one. At this point, I decided to work more on myself and set my priorities straight. What really did I want?

Now, would I ever go back to a 9-5 job? Yes I would, on the condition that my health isn't compromised, the pay is worth it and I'd be doing something I love. If not, I don't think I'd be able to settle for less again. Once bitten, forever shy.

Another thing I learned this year is that happiness is a very personal thing. Your happiness shouldn't depend on others no matter who they are, be it a husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, fiance(e), even family. God is the source of all happiness and when we walk in His light, although we may encounter challenges, God never disappoints like humans. I had my fair share of heartbreaking moments this year. Heartbreaks are draining...like they literally suck the life out of you but they make you stronger.

Again, guard your peace of mind. Cut off what/whoever threatens your peace of mind. If something no longer serves you, let it go. This was what prompted me to delete my BBM(Blackberry Messenger) Also, be mindful of the bridges you burn. Believe it or not, God will not come down to help you, instead He uses those around you to do His work. So be mindful of the relationships you choose to end. Ephesians 4:26 says, 'If you become angry, do not let your anger lead you into sin and do not stay angry all day.'(GNB) Do not let anger influence your final decisions.

Finally, there's no perfect timing for anything. NOW, is the time to do what you have to do. If you have a project you've been thinking about for a while but you feel you don't have everything to kick it off, just start with the little you have. That's what I did as regards the style segment on here. I wanted to wait till I got a digital camera to start taking pictures but I thought to give my phone camera a try and voila! It's been 5 style posts and still counting. I know the camera would eventually come but before it does, I'll make use of what I have.

Despite the lows, I'm still grateful to God for the lessons learned and most especially for life. For the fact that I fell ill a lot more than I usually do this year but I recovered, is enough for me to be happy. I'm also super grateful to the few friends who never left, who kept caring and encouraging...You guys dunno what you did for me ohh! Your words were like rays of sunshine on the most cloudy days and I'm too grateful. I don't have so much going on at the moment but I definitely have a lot to look forward to in January. It's going to be packed!

To you, my awesome readers, THANK YOU! Despite my battle with inconsistency this year, you stuck around. I appreciate each and every one of you. I promise to do better next year so stay with me. That's it guys! I did a Christmas themed shoot and that would be coming up next.

Be right back,

"When life hands you lemons, make lemonade." This saying/quote excites me whenever I hear it...But first, how are youuu??? Geez! I didn't realize I'd been away this long. Honestly, I've been very distracted lately. No excuses though. I'm still trying to achieve a few things before the year ends and it's not been really easy. So I've decided to calm down a bit and just go with the flow...

Lol! When did an intro to a post become so difficult though?! I've been staring at my screen for about 30 minutes thinking of how to start. Anyway, how's everyone doing? The weather here has been so hot these past couple of days and I'm wondering where the harmattan is. I had to loosen my hair so I can pour water on it everyday, that's how hot it is.

"Tick says the clock, tick, tick! What you have to do, do quick!" This is what's currently resounding in my head as I type this post because I was supposed to do this like a week ago. Oh well, I'm here now. Forgive me though. How have you been? Let's face it, the year is gone already. I'm no longer surprised at how fast October zoomed off...time is on a jet plane after all.

In my last post here I mentioned something about my outfit causing a quarrel at home. So I'm here to tell you what really happened and to also know your take on the issue.

If you've been following my blog for a while, you'll know that I just recently started my fashion/style segment. For my shoots, I usually meet up with my friend who takes me pictures at a location that's approximately 20 minutes away from home. Now, on this day, I wore a pair of dungarees and was ready to set out. My mum was home at the time and as usual, she had something to say about my outfit. In her words, "Is this thing not too short?" My response, "No, it's not". And a "hmmmm" followed. I knew trouble was lurking around closely but I chose to ignore because I knew what I had on was decent enough.

When I got back home, the showdown began. My mum was furious that I actually went out wearing what I wore and that I should be weary about what 'people' would say. Then my dad chipped in and said that there was nothing absolutely wrong with my outfit and it was quite a debate that evening that left me in tears.

Now, I'm not one to show skin(cleavage, a little bit of boobs/side boobs) and to me, that's decent enough. I have nothing against shorts as I have quite a few of them coz I feel there's no harm in showing a bit of my legs. It took me years to build my self confidence as regards my legs and now, I'm at this level where I'm very comfortable showing them off.

What really is the benchmark for decency? Does it mean that I'm an irresponsible person for showing a bit of legs or is this just a major stereotype among quite a huge number of African parents playing out here?  Or is this one of those things you have to endure while staying with your parents in your mid twenties? Because, really, I felt like a teenager who was being scolded for having bad grades in school on that particular day.

I have my reservations but let me save them for another day. Please let me know what you think in the comments section. I'm looking forward to your opinions on this.

See you in November.
xo, Evita.

Hey guys! How's your week going and how was your weekend? Did you get to hangout with friends, attend a wedding or spend time with family? Speaking of weddings, I haven't attended any this year. Weird? I'm not much of a wedding person except it's that of a family member or a really close friend. Well, I have one coming up next month and I'm super excited because I'm one of the bridesmaids. I'm not weird after all.lol.

My dad loves to experiment in the kitchen. He comes up with sometimes, awkward food combinations and when he's in the zone, we just leave the kitchen for him to work his magic. One Sunday, on his way back from an evening stroll he brought home cocoyams.

Myself and my mum gave each other this "he has come again" type of look and giggled. Normally, we eat yam, potatoes and plantain but cocoyam? Unless it's supposed to be used as a thickener for soup, then it wasn't needed. So, my dad told me to peel some of it and boil just like you'd boil yam and I did. Then he said we were going to eat it with palm oil and I said, 'huh? cocoyam and palm oil? when it's not yam.' And he responded, 'try it first'. I indeed tried it and it tasted really nice. It had this unique taste that you'd never notice when it's used as a thickener.

Now, my mind had already been tuned to the fact that cocoyams are nowhere on the same level as yams because my immediate environment made me feel so.The next time you visit an open air market, check out where cocoyams are placed and compare with that of yams. It'll become clear to you that indeed, there's some discrimination going on. Even in some African cultures, cocoyams are looked down upon because they are seen as inferior crops and were mostly planted by women. While yams are the big boys because they require more work to cultivate and harvest. If you've read "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe then you would understand better.

Unknowingly to some of us, cocoyam is more nutritious than yam as it's packed with more nutrients, fiber and vitamins. It's also good for weight loss as opposed to yam. In fact, it's a healthier and cheaper alternative to yam. So, this got me thinking, do we take more pride in eating certain foods because of how they've been presented to us over time?
Have you had a similar experience like mine with some other food?
And what crop do you also think is being discriminated against?

It's always a pleasure reading your feedback. Please do well to leave me your comments.

I'll be back soon.
xo, Evita.

Hello beautiful people! How's everything going? Hope all is well with you and yours. I'm doing good and not so much has been happening. I was stuck somewhere in my head but then, I'm not letting all that funk weigh me down. I blanked out(not in the crazy way.lol.) for a few days and now I'm back!

I've realized that sometimes, it's okay to hide away in our shells. Let's look at it from this angle. Most of us have been alive for the past 2 decades+ and more than half of these years were spent in schools at different levels. Now we're done with school (for now at least) and we're all about work and business. Our brains are constantly brewing new ideas, keeping dates, trying to keep up with friends, commitments and so many other things. Then one day you wake up and you're blank. Like your brain pressed the pause button and you're just floating around.

This has happened to me twice before and the first time, I fought it so hard because I thought I was losing it. It was as if my brain had strayed and I was lost somewhere.

It happened a second time and I let it be this time. To 'blank out' in this regard doesn't necessarily mean having selective memory where you choose to forget/ignore somethings/persons or that one is going insane. It can also be a time for retreat/renewal.

This time around, I let it run its course and when it ended, I picked up a few lessons from it;

• Retreat! For us Christians, you know we have periods of retreat where we go into some sort of seclusion and go into deep soul searching and meditation, trying to find our paths once more and get back on track. So it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong, it's a mental relaxation process which is very much needed. Mental health is paramount.

• Your brain needs a break every now and then. Yes, that's why we have holidays after each term/semester in school and leave/vacation from work. Although, these focus more on physical relaxation, this is more of a mental vacation. Relax, it doesn't mean that you're going crazy just like I thought at first.

• It lets you appreciate your being, nature and also, be less judgmental. It reminds me that its okay to be human, flaws and all.

• God is enough. Amidst all the drama and whatnot, you realize that there's only one thing that really matters, and that's your relationship with God. It's a time to evaluate all other relationships in your life and put things in perspective once again.

• It's okay to be alone sometimes. This gives you time to know yourself more and be a better version of YOU.

• And no, It's not depression. At first I asked myself if I was depressed and googled a lot about depression and it appeared I was sound. It's not that deep yo.
