My NYSC Experience (Part 1)

2:01:00 pm

Yes! I was all set for the long awaited NYSC experience. After hearing all the exciting and thrilling stories about camp and waiting for a whole year to be called up, finally, it was time.
As I sat in my school's sport's complex, waiting for my turn to approach the student affairs officers who were handing out the call up letters, my heartbeat trippled.lol! So it got to my turn and I felt like I was floating on air, couldn't feel my legs. Yes!! It was time to roll out my big traveling bag with my white shorts and sneakers which I carefully picked out with my padi, Chidiebere at Trade fair. Yes, that moment was upon me. The very moment I'd been dreaming about since I was a "Jambite".(oya, its enuf) Back to reality.

As I approached the officers at their desk, I just started smiling for no reason (lol, actually there were lots of reasons) I greeted them and they responded with their somewhat straight faces. Well,it was expected.attending to such a large crowd wasn't an easy task. Then I presented my identification and I was certified "cleared". So, one of the officers beckoned on me to search for my call up letter among the pile where they were neatly stacked. With shaky hands, I quietly searched for my name on the heading of the call up letters quite meticulously. Then my eyes caught the heading on one of the call up letters, "ENWEFAH OGOCHUKWU AGNES".

"Aha! That's it!!", I thought. I smiled, more like a chuckle and then I quickly scanned the letter to see where I had been posted to. "Ede Camp,Hospital Road, Ede, Osun State." "Yippee!!!" Southwest. That wasn't all, the date to report to camp was September 2nd, 2014. Ah ahn!! How na?! Stream 2? *sigh*. My knees almost buckled. God why? Its so close, yet so far. My big smile suddenly faded. Disappointment and a twinge of anger took over.

Whether I liked it or not, I had to accept my fate. September 2nd it was. Another long month at home, awaiting to answer the much anticipated clarion call. After all, I waited for a year to get my callup letter so what was the big deal in waiting for another month to go to camp. Pffft!!
The waiting period was going on well till one fateful day, on the news, it was reported that one Patrick Sawyer from Liberia had flown into Nigeria and collapsed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport. What?!?! Liberia, Ebola. God, pleaseeeeeeee!!! My eyes and ears were wide open. I quickly logged into Twitter to see the latest gists concerning this incident. Trust Naija Twitter lol! All sorts of tweets were flying in. Then on a serious note, it was announced that this Patrick Sawyer had been diagnosed with Ebola. EBOLA!!! Ebola was in Nigeria. Hayyyy!!! Yours truly started crying o.hehehehe!!! I wasn't crying because millions of lives were not at stake(God forgive me) I was crying because obviously all hopes of going to camp had been dashed .

    1. Loool!! Thanks Cassandra. Lucky you. It's going to be stress free for u. I envied the doctors back then in camp. They were exempted from all the drills and stuff. It was fun though. The story continues in part 2.
